Trustee and grant application coordinator for the Oakland Foundation, Mark Williams, recently visited the Unlocking Potential (UP) Foundation CIC’s Monday evening football sessions for 10–13‑year‑olds at Trinity High School in Redditch.

The lively session, attended by 26 young people, highlighted the difference the programme makes every week. Running during term time from 5.30pm to 7.00pm, the sessions are funded by the Oakland Foundation as part of its commitment to helping local children access safe, positive activities.

Reflecting on his visit, Mark said: “Seeing these sessions first-hand really brought home how vital they are. When young people are given safe spaces, positive influences and opportunities to connect, it can completely change the direction of their lives. These sessions aren’t just about football, they’re about confidence, belonging and giving young people the chance to thrive.

“The Oakland Foundation is delighted to support the UP Foundation’s work and to see the real, tangible impact it’s having. The dedication of the staff, the energy of the young people and the sense of community they have built is outstanding. It’s exactly the kind of programme we’re proud to champion, one that opens doors and removes barriers for young people who deserve every opportunity.”

The UP Foundation has been supporting children and young people aged 10–25 across Redditch for the past decade. Its mission is to unlock the potential of every young person it works with, helping them overcome barriers to social inclusion, education, personal development and wellbeing.

The twice‑weekly football sessions are a key part of that mission. Early adolescence is a crucial time for emotional and social development, and providing structured activity, encouragement, and strong role models can be transformational. For many attendees, these sessions offer not only physical activity but also friendship, guidance and a sense of belonging within their community.

Speaking about the programme, Heather Stephens of the UP Foundation commented: The sessions attract young people from a variety of backgrounds and allow them to exercise, connect with others and build confidence. By rewarding positive behaviours, such as resilience and teamwork, vital skills are learned. For participants who require additional support this is also provided through focused mentoring.

“We are so grateful to the Oakland foundation for providing this vital funding.”

The Oakland Foundation children’s charity is committed to supporting under‑16s and their families through education, health, nutrition and sport, ensuring every child has the chance to shine.
