Leicestershire’s Marlene Reid Centre’s May half term holiday club has once again been fully subscribed and packed with children having fun thanks to funding support from children’s charity Oakland Foundation.

Open to local Children living in Coalville and surrounding villages, aged between 5 – 11 years, the children took part in a range of interactive activities including arts and crafts, social and imaginative play, sports, team building games, nature exploration and cooking.

MRC’s Chelsea Vesty said: “Running over three full days, the children enjoyed a buffet-style breakfast on arrival before choosing from a range of activities supported by an adult lead, including a nutritious and balanced meal each day.

“They completed various projects over the half term week including designing and painting their own garden ornaments ready for summer, a cookery class where the children got hands-on to make their own lunch wraps with a range of different vegetables to try and then following a recipe they cooked their own waffles for pudding.

“They also took part in team building sports and games to promote physical fitness and improve their motor skills, the favourite being ‘floor is lava’, finishing the week with a wonderful outing to Conkers Discovery Centre and learning all about the environment including a very special bush craft lesson with Ranger Dave, building their own shelters from natural materials found in the woodland, as well as learning how to start a fire safely before toasting marshmallows to celebrate our outdoor victories.”

The Oakland Foundation charity supports children under the age of 16 and their families through initiatives based around education, health and nutrition, and sport, with their aim to ensure children, irrespective of social background, or physical ability, can participate.

Oakland Foundation trustee Mark Williams who met the children during a morning session commented: “It’s a pleasure to support the MRC team and to contribute to their May half term project that benefits so many local children.

“What a great morning, with youngsters just having fun!”
