Thousands of families across North Northamptonshire are enjoying free opportunities to try new sports, improve wellbeing and access local support services through the return of the area’s popular Active Fundays.

Supported by children’s charity The Oakland Foundation, the annual programme of four North Northamptonshire Council run community events has brought together residents, local organisations and activity providers in Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden and Kettering throughout August.

Oakland Foundation Trustee and Grants Co-ordinator, Mark Williams, visited the Rushden event at Spencer Park, where around 2,500 people attended a packed programme designed to encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen community connections.

From climbing towers, archery and football to judo, swingball and interactive games, visitors of all ages had the chance to take part in a wide variety of activities.

Local organisations were also on hand to offer health, welfare and wellbeing advice, while police, fire and ambulance teams welcomed children and parents to explore their vehicles and learn more about their work.

Families gathered throughout the day to enjoy picnics and make the most of the park’s activities and attractions.

Mark Williams said: “It was fantastic to see so many local families enjoying the event together. The atmosphere was incredibly positive, with something for everyone to get involved in and enjoy.

“What impressed me most was the range of organisations supporting the day. Alongside the sporting activities, families could access valuable advice and information, making it a truly inclusive event.

“Creating opportunities that support healthier, happier and more connected communities aligns closely with the Foundation’s aims, and it was wonderful to see the positive impact these events are having across North Northamptonshire.”

The fundays form part of wider efforts to encourage residents to lead more active lifestyles, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and connect with services available within their local area.

The events particularly focus on ensuring families from all backgrounds can take part by removing barriers to participation and providing a wide range of free attractions and activities.

Cllr Ken Harrington, North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive lead for parks, said: “The Active Fundays are a fantastic example of how we can bring communities together while encouraging people of all ages to be more active and improve their wellbeing. It is wonderful to see thousands of residents enjoying these free events, discovering new activities and connecting with local organisations that can provide ongoing support throughout the year.”

The Active Fundays have grown in popularity year on year, attracting thousands of attendees and helping connect residents with local clubs, community groups and support services that can continue making a difference long after the summer events have ended.

For The Oakland Foundation, supporting initiatives that help children, young people and families thrive remains a key priority.
